Peli Profiles: Oscar Ferguson

A Family Holiday Through The Lens

Our guests are like family to us so when we see them doing really cool and exciting things, we feel it necessary to share with the world. Oscar Ferguson has been coming to Peligoni since he was 17, and in the four years since, he’s blossomed into a talented photographer and filmmaker. Oscar kindly gave us a glimpse of his recent family holiday to Peligoni and spoke to us about why his family love the club and his journey behind the lens…

WHY DID YOUR FAMILY COME TO PELIGONI AND WHAT KEPT YOU COMING BACK?

There is something for all of us at the club which we haven’t found anywhere else. There are six of us and some want to just relax all week and some want to sail every time the wind is up, and having all that in the same place is perfect.

DESCRIBE A PERFECT DAY AT THE CLUB

The perfect day at the club starts with paddle boarding in the morning before the wind picks up and the sea is flat. This is usually followed by trying to push each other off the pontoon. Sailing in the afternoon then to the club for dinner.

WHAT’S THE SECRET TO A SUCCESSFUL FAMILY HOLIDAY

Just having something for everyone really! We are all different, we want to do different things at different times and that’s why Peligoni  works so well.

HOW DID YOU START GETTING INTO FILM/PHOTOGRAPHY?

I started making little films in the garden with my mates years ago and just sort of kept at it. Learning a lot of what I know on YouTube and then filming and taking photos as often as I could. It’s not something they really teach in school properly because it’s so practical. The more I have done it the more I have loved it and now I can’t imagine doing anything else!

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?

Just keep making films and taking photos! It’s hard to make an exact plan because you never know what’s gonna happen so you just having to keep going at it and see where it gets you!

DO YOU THINK SOCIAL MEDIA HAS HAD AN EFFECT ON THE WAY FAMILIES INTERACT?

I think it depends on the family. We all use social media, especially Instagram, but I would imagine a lot of families don’t. A lot of people see it as a negative thing but I don’t agree. It has had a really positive effect on our family, if one of us is away somewhere its really nice for the others to see our Instagram story of what we are up to. That doesn’t mean its all good, there are definitely ways it has a hugely negative effect on people and families, but I think that has more to do with the way in which people use it rather than the social media platform its self. With time I think a lot of the negative side will be worked out and it will really find its place.

YOU’VE FOUND YOUR PASSION IN LIFE – WHAT WOULD BE YOUR ADVICE TO OUR YOUNGER GUESTS WHO ARE SEEKING THEIR OWN?

Find what you love and then keep doing it. And if you don’t know what that is yet keep doing things you like and think are fun and then make a job out of it. There is no one path to do what you want, the best path is the one you make for yourself. If you can manage to do what you are passionate you will never work a day in your life!

TELL US ABOUT YOUR COMPANY

I started the company about 6 months with Joel Barney after we met working in a coffee shop together and talking about films for our whole shift. A couple of weeks later we produced our first short which has been nominated for the Hampshire prize at the Winchester Short Film Festival and since then things have gone really well! We are currently in pre production of our third short and two music videos and still have loads planned for the future!
