A holiday at Peligoni is so much more than watersports, sunbathing and long summery lunches. The local area of northern Zakynthos, whilst being largely untouched, should definitely be explored.
The Island Of Zakynthos
The southernmost of the Ionian islands, you could say that Zakynthos is a tale of two places. In its south you’ll find a plethora of party-goers, sandy beaches and bustling bars, and in the north, where The Peligoni Club resides, you’ll discover a beautifully untainted way of life. With the occasional ring of a goat’s bell, the peaceful ambience up here will make you feel like you’ve time travelled – and you might not want to go home!
Surrounded by azure waters and swathed in glorious Greek heat in the summer months, Zakynthos is the epitome of rustic and idyllic. The pre-summer rainy season adorns the island with lush vegetation and exquisite flora, so be sure to bring your paints or camera if you’re seeking landscapes to capture.
In the nearby mountain village of Volimes you can buy hand-made lace, bed linen, crocheted bed-spreads, rugs, pottery and honey. Or try an Ouzo with pistachio nuts in one of the tiny bars.
Drive through the pungent pine forests to the beautiful Venetian monasteries of Anafonitria and St.George’s, and next to it, view the famous shipwreck on Navagio Beach from the giddy heights of the cliffs.
In The South
The bustling capital, Zakynthos town, is an hour away. Destroyed by an earthquake in 1953, the elegant Venetian houses, icon rich churches, museums and a magnificent sweeping harbour have all been faithfully restored. It’s suprisingly cosmopolitan and a pleasant place to wander, dine and shop.
At the southern end of the island, there’s Go Karting, horse riding and a water park.
There are a few select local tavernas that we’ve known and loved for years. Serving plates of amazing local Greek dishes from hearty homemade moussaka to calamari with tzatziki, these spots are the go-to for fantastic local food.
We’ll happily suggest the best local restaurant to satisfy your craving for Greek specialities. Just head to Reception for recommendations and reservations.
